2017-present
Company Available Upon Request
Systems Engineer – Directory Services
Responsibilities
Maintaining and managing on-premise Active Directory, DNS,
DHCP, PKI, OCSP, DFS, GPOs in a large multi-forest,
multi-national organization composed of 2000+ DNS zones, 350
DNS servers, 350 Domain controllers across 120 (now under 50)
domains, 4000 DHCP scopes, 15 independent PKIs, more than 100
DFS trees and several thousand GPOs.
Projects
DES/RC4 Remediation Conducted full remediation of RC4
across all Active Directory Domains in a large, multi-national
organization.
NTLM Remediation Conducted full remediation of
NTLM authentication across all Active Directory Domains
in a large, multi-national organization. Resolved NTLM hit rates exceeding 12 million requests per day.
Simple LDAP Remediation Conducted conversion to
LDAPS across all Active Directory Domains in a large,
multi-national organization.
Weak Cipher Remediation Conducted conversion to
strong cipher suites across all Active Directory Domains in a
large, multi-national organization.
Stale Account Remediation Developed automation to
clean up tens of thousands of stale, unmonitored user
accounts. The automation currently cleans up accounts as
they reach usage thresholds without human intervention.
Stale Computer Remediation Developed automation to
clean up computer accounts as they meet cleanup criteria.
Conversion to GMSA Accounts Converted over 1000
standard service accounts to GMSAs with no downtime
DNS Rebuild
Redesigned the DNS infrastructure to be more fault tolerant.
Performance was significantly improved and duplicate
authoritative zones were eliminated. The DNS infrastructure in
composed of more than 2000 vanity domains and 350 DNS servers.
Most conditional forwarders were eliminated. Reverse lookup
zones were implemented. Automatic registration issues were
fixed. Automatic cleanup of stale records was implemented. All
Windows zones were converted to forest-integrated zones.
DHCP Rebuild
Redesigned the DHCP infrastructure to be fault tolerant and
managed more easily. Consolidated numerous DHCP servers into 3
DHCP clusters. Prior to this project, the DHCP infrastructure
had no fault tolerance and was managed from 35 different
management points. This was consolidated into 3 DHCP clusters
while also adding fault-tolerant DHCP scopes.
PKI Rebuild
Constructed an enterprise cross-forest Public Key Infrastructure. Numerous
independent PKIs were consolidated into a single enterprise
PKI. In total, 40 certification authorities across 20
independent PKIs were decommissioned. More rigorous
certificate issuance policies were implemented. Certificate
key lengths were increased to 4096 bits. Automatic certificate
enrollment was implemented. Certificate utilization was
significantly improved, and self-signed certificates were
eliminated. Applications were migrated to the new
infrastructure and/or converted to certificate-based
communication. The new PKI has designated certificate officers
to issue certificates that cannot be automatically issued.
Certificate renewal was enabled. Use-specific certificate
templates were developed. In all, more than 60,000 endpoint
vulnerabilities were eliminated by this project. The new PKI issues 200,000 certificates per year.
Automation Infrastructure
Automation infrastructure was created to improve management
and consistency across and environment with dozens of
disassociated domains. The infrastructure was able to
self-modify after the initial roll out and is currently used
to enforce mandatory GPOs, Password policies, identity
lifetimes and a host of other things. The infrastructure is
capable of compiling reports of significant complexity and can
make corrections to configurations, if needed.
Centrify Rebuild
Restructuring of Centrify services to improve manageability.
Centrify was upgraded and expanded to manage more devices.
Existing functions were refactored to improve manageability.
The ability to manage Unix devices using GPOs was implemented.
Automatic certificate enrollment was implemented. Provisioning
and role groups were refactored to enhance functionality.
DFS Rebuild
DFS restructuring was performed to improve availability and
management. DFS was implemented across 80+ domains to abstract
data locations. This allows mass storage to be relocated
without the need to touch endpoints since DFS effectively
redirects the user from a central pointer. DFS namespaces were
widely distributed to increase fault tolerance in the DFS
tree. All data was migrated from the DFS tree to mass-storage
appliances.
Trust Restructuring
Domain trusts were implemented to significantly reduce the
number of user accounts with elevated access. Two domains were
chosen for administrative accounts and trusts were established
across the enterprise to allow delegation of elevated rights
to those accounts. Tier-0 Administrative attack surface was
reduced from more than 800 accounts to just 6.
